2023 started with increased popularity for AI. ChatGPT is one of those leading tools that uses AI to generate content. It emerged as a powerful tool with various applications, gaining recognition as a game-changer in the digital landscape. Intrigued by its potential, I embarked on a journey to explore whether ChatGPT could assist job seekers in preparing for crucial interviews. In this blog, I will share my experience of testing this AI tool and its effectiveness in providing interview guidance for a real role.
Experimenting with ChatGPT
Step 1: Selecting a Genuine Job Opportunity
To thoroughly assess ChatGPT's capabilities, I chose an authentic job opportunity with a client. I obtained detailed documents outlining the role's requirements, ensuring authenticity and relevance.
Step 2: Equipping ChatGPT with Relevant Information
Armed with the job description, the client's background, and the desired experience sought by the employer, I inputted this comprehensive data into ChatGPT. This comprehensive input was crucial for generating accurate and personalized advice.
Step 3: Seeking Feedback from a Recruitment Consultant
To evaluate the quality of ChatGPT's output, I sought the opinion of one of our experienced recruiters, who has years of expertise in interview preparation. Their knowledge includes conducting conversations with employers to understand their hiring needs and providing candidates with written job descriptions.
Enriching Interview Preparation with ChatGPT:
By utilizing ChatGPT, I aimed to enhance our consultancy services and offer candidates a comprehensive step-by-step guide for their interviews. The AI tool rapidly generated tailored guidance, surpassing the speed at which human consultants could create similar content. However, it is important to note that ChatGPT still relies on initial information, such as the job description and candidate specifications, which must be input manually. This process, including the transfer of information, can be time-consuming. Moreover, it is crucial to ensure the quality of the content by checking for inaccuracies, biases, and other potential issues. The human touch remains essential.
When asked, "Would you use this feature to support your candidates going to an interview?", our recruiter said:
"I would use this process to help guide candidates to successfully progress within the application process to secure the job at the end of the day. It's detailed but not a lengthy essay because it's well-structured, easy to read, and provides the tools for your candidate to succeed. It's a more efficient way of assisting me in performing my job to the best of my ability. It's simple yet effective.
It is worth mentioning that the preparation will always depend on the client's requirements for a candidate. The advice piece did require slight tweaks to re-adjust the way in which I would advise someone to prepare for an interview. Upon initial review, I suggested highlighting specific words to emphasize the importance of certain advice.”
ChatGPT demonstrated promising potential as a valuable resource for interview preparation. Its ability to swiftly provide personalized guidance proved advantageous, surpassing the speed of human consultants. However, it is important to maintain a human-in-the-loop approach to ensure accuracy, detect biases, and guarantee the overall quality of the advice provided. While ChatGPT can enhance the interview preparation process, it is most effective when utilized in conjunction with human expertise. As AI continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how it further transforms and optimizes the job search experience.
