Making a career move is a big decision. Sometimes you know it’s time for a change; other times, you may wonder whether you are simply having a difficult week or whether your current role genuinely no longer fits your goals. Before updating your CV or starting your job search, ask yourself if you are ready for your next career move.
Here are some signs that it may be time to explore what is next.
1. You have stopped learning
If you have mastered your responsibilities, rarely face new challenges and no longer feel you are developing new skills, you may have reached a learning plateau.
Career growth doesn’t always mean a promotion. Sometimes, it means finding an environment that challenges you in new ways.
2. You are no longer excited about your work
Not every day at work will be exciting. But if you consistently feel disconnected, unmotivated or are constantly counting down the hours, it’s worth asking why.
Is it your role, company, manager, or have your interests simply changed?
3. Your career goals have changed
Your ambitions today may be very different from three or five years ago.
Perhaps you now want to lead a team, specialise in a new area or prioritise flexibility and work-life balance. Your career should evolve as you do.
If your current role no longer aligns with your priorities, it may be time to explore other options.
4. You are ready for more responsibility
If you’re consistently taking on responsibilities beyond your role, managing projects, mentoring colleagues or solving problems at a higher level, you may be ready for your next challenge.
Your experience could be telling you that it’s time to take the next step.
5. You have achieved what you set out to do
Think back to when you accepted your current role. What did you want to achieve?
If you’ve accomplished those goals and gained the experience you were looking for, it may simply be time for a new chapter.
Leaving a role doesn’t always mean something went wrong. Sometimes, it means you’ve completed that stage of your career.
6. You know what you want next
Being ready for a career move isn’t just about knowing what you want to leave behind. It’s also about knowing what you want to move towards.
Ask yourself:
What type of role do I want?
What skills do I want to develop?
What kind of culture suits me?
What are my career priorities?
You don’t need every answer, but having some direction will make your search more effective. Your next move starts with you.
Ask yourself, “What do I want my next chapter to look like?”
Once you know the answer, you can start taking the steps to make it happen.
