I recently returned from a short visit to Sydney, my old stomping ground, during which I caught up with a number of friends in the recruitment industry. The conversation would always centre around how I have found working in Australia, Asia and the Middle East and the biggest difference, I would say, in one word, given I was a contract recruiter when in Oz, would be “Fractional.”

What is Fractional Work?

Fractional work means hiring senior experts for part-time or project hours. These workers embed inside a company. They act as leaders, fix problems, and get things done without a full-time cost.

Back in the early 2000s, I was a dedicated contract recruiter focusing on placing people into Accounting & Finance roles. Candidates from the Big Four and Y2K were a perfect combination and the number of qualified Chartered Accountants (CAs) who were employed on the famous working holiday visa (the 417) in Australia sky rocketed. Qualified CAs from the UK were employed for 3-6 month stints, which kicked off a period of talented Aussies realising they could do the same and have a semblance of work-life balance whilst making good money.

Conversely, Asia, especially Singapore and Southeast Asia, is finally embracing fractional leadership quickly to help startups and small businesses scale and to bridge the gap whilst budgets are or are not approved.

  • Talent Arbitrage: Companies in Singapore hire fractional leaders based in lower-cost hubs like Kuala Lumpur or Manila.

  • Rising Demand: Job listings and talent networks have grown significantly since 2024.

  • Agility Focus: Governments and firms view fractional roles as a way to boost workforce productivity and manage economic shifts.

In the UAE, fractional is also surging, especially due to the regional conflict that has unfortunately made a number of fantastic people jobless. However, with places like Dubai being such a hub for entrepreneurs, the pivot to contract roles has been swift, especially since the government has ensured that visas are fairly easy to come by and they have recognised they do not want an exodus of good Talent.

Like in SEA, Fintech companies and those that require people on a project basis are leading the charge and titles such as Fractional Chief Communications Officer, Chief Marketing Officer or even Internal Comms Lead working closely with HR for short term positions are becoming more popular.

Fractional hires can get the benefit of solving a problem for an organisation whilst adding something new to their profile without getting too involved in company politics. This can be a win-win for both parties, especially during this period of global uncertainty.

Until the next time Sydney 😊
